Our generation is unhappy

Originally I got this question on Quora. I am going to the public that answer which I found most valuable and interesting with some editing and adding my own views also.

This is a very genuine question why our generation is unhappy? Actually, we got everything which is necessary to live a happy life then what is the reason behind this unhappiness. Everyone is complaining that life is not fair to him/her. He/she deserves more than what he/she got.

We can see a lot of things which make us happy. Ok. See the points given below:

1. World hunger has dropped

Today, we admit that our purchasing power is increased. Our productivity (especially foods and other edible items) has increased by double. If you see, in the 1990s, one billion people or almost one in five, were chronically undernourished. Now, that number has decreased to just below 800 million or about one in every nine.

So mathematically, we must be happy. But, are we happy?

2. Sexual assault against women has dropped

The rate of sexual assault and rape has fallen 63% since 1993, from a rate of 4.3 assaults per 1,000 people in 1993 to 1.6 per 1000 in 2015.

Wow! A great news. A valid reason for happiness.

So mathematically, we must be happy. But, are we happy?

3. The global economy has grown massively

The economy is the backbone for growing any civilization. Since 1990 the global economy has grown more than it did during the 10,000 years from the beginning of agriculture to 1950.

Again a reason for happiness.

So mathematically, we must be happy. But, are we happy?

4. Losses due to wars have dropped

Wars happen very often in ancient civilization. Due to lack of medical facilities, the death rate is also very high. This world is an evidence of many wars and deaths. But now, there have been far fewer casualties than the hundreds of thousands of deaths in the World Wars and the wars fought before that.

A news for cheers. Even having the dangerous weapons, we are very less in conflicts and wars. We have grown up. No?

Maybe the fear of being extinct don’t allow us to fight. Come what may it is a great reason for happiness for mankind.

So mathematically, we must be happy. But, are we happy?

5. World literacy rate has risen.

A famous proverb is: “Education is just like the need of water”. So true it is.

Now, global literacy rates have been climbing over the course of the last two centuries. Secondary and tertiary education have also seen drastic growth, with global average years of schooling being much higher now than a hundred years ago.

We are getting the education. After some years, we will get a 100% literacy rate.

A very good news. We must be happy. But, are we happy?

6. We have internet

We are living in the era of the internet. We can search for what we want. I can post this answer on a global platform while lying on my bed, which can be read by a person living even on the other side of the world.

This is a miracle. Isn’t it?

But, think. Can we search for happiness?

Literally, we are searching for that. I got a lot of related keywords on Google. i.e. how to be happy? What is real happiness? Am I wasting my life? How to be content? How to be satisfied? What makes me really happy? Etc.

Can we search for happiness on Google? Really?

No. No.. A big No.

The only reason for this unhappiness is far above in the para. It is:

“Life is not fair with me. I deserve more than what I got”.

Otherwise, the world is getting mature, responsible and happy day by day.

Just calm down and read this quote.

“Folks are usually about as happy as they make their minds up to be.”

– Abraham Lincoln

Cheers! 😀

Yes. I don’t know why our generation is unhappy? 😀
